Meaning of Makoto

At the heart of our mission is our name, Makoto, which carries a profound dual meaning that defines both our artistic discipline and institutional character. The literal translation of makoto is “pure drum sound.”  Additionally, the word makoto embodies the foundational Japanese virtue of sincerity, truthfulness, altruism, reliability, and integrity. This value governs our organizational culture, guiding how we train students, collaborate with partners, and steward community resources. Together, these principles ensure that our pure drum sound is a direct reflection of drumming with sincerity and intention.

“Play with Makoto (intention, sincerity), from the heart, with 150% energy, without ego.”

— Hunter Loyd, Artistic Director
